Freaky

Ok, so last night on my way to Shoppers (my daily outing) I ran into one of these. Being an archaeologist I continued to walk looking at the ground. There were tons of them. All different sizes, but it was the ones that were 5cm or more long that freaked me out. I had to watch where I stepped so as not to squish one of these large animals (the evidence that others had already done this lay strewn across the sidewalk). It was so weird. For anyone who doesn't know what these are, they are Predaceous Diving Beetles, and yes they are supposed to live in water. Apparently, the adults sometimes leave the water at night to fly to other water bodies, and while flying they are often attracted to lights. They feed on other aquatic arthropods and small aquatic animals including fish. How exactly this many of them made it into the cement and asphalt parking lot so far from any obvious water sources large enough for them is beyond me. It looked like a plague. Needless to say, they totally freaked me out.

Forget Heaven and Hell....

Do you ever feel like you are living in limbo?
Like you are just waiting for the day when you wake up, everything falls into place, and your living the life that you’ve always wanted. Instead, you wake up and look into the mirror to see that you are no longer a child, then look around and realize you don’t have the adult life you expected either. I know the cliché that to get what you want you have to work for it, but how many years is enough? What does it take to get the assurance you need in order to achieve all of your wildest dreams, or even just the realistic ones? And, if you are constantly waiting around are you toying with the inevitable fate of failure or just putting off your chances to be happy?

I can’t help but wonder… is it best to make any choice, regardless of the outcome, just to avoid limbo?

What hurts more… honesty or kind lies?

For those of you who don’t know what a kind lie is… I will explain. It is when someone says something just because they are trying to be polite, but the trained ear can tell they do not really mean what they are saying. Hence, the someone thinks it is more kind to lie than to honestly reveal their true feelings on the matter. The question is… should a trained ear call someone on their kind lying and explain that it much less work on both of their parts to stop the pretending and just be honest? And what about all of those untrained ears that are oblivious to the fact that they are subjected to kind lies? Are they happier in their ignorance? Would honesty, in this case, cause them more harm than justice?

I can’t help but wonder… in a society where children grow up being taught that it is wrong to lie, what makes “kind lies” the exception?
